The Shrimps couldn't fight back from a very early goal, losing to one of the play-off favourites, in-form Northampton at Sixfields on Saturday.

Morecambe got off to the worst possible start when they went a goal down after just two minutes. Liam Davies took control of the ball just inside the Morecambe half and, after markers backed off allowing him a free run into the area, he stunned Sammy McIlroy's side with an excellent low shot that flew into the bottom right hand corner of Barry Roche's goal.

There was further bad news to come when Will Haining was forced to leave the field just after the half hour after picking up a knock and being replaced by Dave Artell.

Morecambe ended the first half strongly but their comeback hopes were dashed early in the second half when Ryan Gilligan doubled Northampton's lead with a neat finish from Adebayo Akinfenwa's neat lay off.

McKay curled an effort wide moments later, while the second Morecambe change was Wayne Curtis for Mark Duffy.

Andy Parrish was booked for tripping Liam Davis on the edge of the area, the free kick routine ended with a Gilligan shot deflected wide. Akinfenwa then drew a standing ovation from the crowd as he tracked a man for 50 yards before winning the ball back.

Curtis was booked for a foul on Rodgers, before Luke Guttridge replaced Ryan Gilligan in the first substitution for the Cobblers.

Davis had an effort superbly blocked by Jim Bentley on 76 minutes, while Steve Guinan made a welcome return to action as an 82nd minute replacement for Billy McKay.

Phil Jevons had an effort deflected wide on 87 minutes, but that was a rare foray forward. Such was the Cobblers dominance, Jason Steele was rarely tested as Ian Sampson's side chalked up their fifth successive victory.
