NINE man Morecambe gave their all but went down to a 3-1 defeat at Plainmoor.
The Shrimps, who were a goal down and reduced to 10 men after just nine minutes, gave their all but fell to defeat as Torquay scored twice in the second half.
The home side took the lead through an Elliot Benyon penalty after Andy Parrish had brought him down. Benyon's spot kick was saved by Barry Roche but he followed up to slot home the rebound.
Parrish was sent off but Morecambe came back superbly and Chris McCready levelled on the half hour with a superb finish.
The Shrimps started the second half well but went 2-1 down when home substitute Ronane Rose beat Barry Roche with a sweetly struck 25 yard drive.
The Gulls added a third on 73 minutes when Benyon slotted home his second of the game when he was all alone in the box to sidefoot home Chris Zebroski's pass from close range.
There was worse to follow for the Shrimps when sub Chris Shuker was sent off for an off the ball incident 10 minutes from time to rub salt into the Shrimps' wounds.
Shrimps' boss Sammy McIlroy sticks with the same side that drew 0-0 with Stevenage at the Globe Arena last week for the long trip to Torquay.
