THE Shrimps went down to their first defeat in four games at Stevenage.
Morecambe had the worst possible start when they were goal down after just five minutes. A low cross came in from the left and Scott Laird nipped in between two Morecambe defenders to slot the ball past Barry Roche from close range.
Three minutes later it was 2-0. Again a cross was swung in from the left hand side and Morecambe defender Kieran Charnock tried to clear but only managed to miscue the ball into his own goal.
Stevenage continued to pile on the pressure with Charlie Griffin wasting a glorious chance to make it 3-0 on 15 minutes and Lauwrie Wilson forcing Roche into a decent save after a left foot shot.
Morecambe's only effort of note came when Chris McCready headed a Laurence Wilson corner over from close range.
The second half was much better for the Shrimps as they dominated possession but struggled to create any cleae chances against the best defence in League 2.
Chris Shuker and Adam Rundle both swung in crosses that just flew past the post before substitute Stuart Hendrie forced a good save from Chris Day with a shot from the edge of the area. Stewart Drummond volleyed an Andy Parrish cross inches wide as the Shrimps battled to the end without any reward.
One change for the Shrimps as Neil Wainwright replaces the departed Mark Duffy on the right hand side of midfield.
Phil Jevons returns to the squad and is on the bench.
