A LATE Cody McDonald goal denied the Shrimps a third successive win.
McDonald scored with just two minutes to go as his looping header beat Barry Roche to frustrate the Shrimps who defended superbly all afternoon.
A Phil Jevons penalty saw Morecambe lead at the break.
Jevons beat Alan Julian from the spot on 21 minutes after Gills' defender Matt Lawrence was adjudged to have handled in the box and Jevons sent the home keeper the wrong way from the spot.
Danny Carlton had a half chance to make it 2-0 on the half hour with a volley from the edge of the box that was well saved by Julian.
After a slow start the home side stepped up a gear towards the end of the half with Morecambe keeper Roche meking thtee great saves and both Chris McCready and Niall Cowperthwaite blocking goalbound efforts.
Roche maintained that form in the second half with a string of fine saves but he was finally beaten by McDonald at the death and the home side almost snatched a dramatic winner when Amndy Barcham twice went close in the six minutes of added time.
