Morecambe suffered their biggest ever Football League defeat at Vale Park this afternoon.
The Shrimps went a goal down on 18 minutes. Port Vale attacked down the middle and Louis Dodds exchanged a quick one two with Marc Richards before firing past Barry Roche from 20 yards out with a low shot that flew into the bottom right hand corner of the Morecambe goal.
Four minutes later it was 2-0 as the Shrimps' defence were undone all too easily. A long ball was piunted down the middle and while the defence appealed for offside Marc Richards nipped in behind the defence to lob the onrushing Roche from 20 yards out.
The Shrimps pulled one back just after the half hour with an excellent strike from Phil Jevons. The striker received the ball on the left hand side of the area and cut inside on to his right foot before curling a superb effort into the top left hand corner of Chris Martin's goal.
Garry Hunter was then denied by Martin but as the Shrimps threatened to work their way back into the game they were undone by another ball straight down the middle which Justin Riachards latched on to and rounded Roche to slot the ball into the empty net.
Two minutes into injury time it was 4-1 as former Shrimps' right back Adam Yates started off a move that ended with Justin Richards smashing home his second and his side's fourth.
Port Vale went close on several occasions at the start of the second half and added a fifth just befofe the hour when Dodds was given too much space and time again on the edge of the box to fire a low effort past Roche to make it 6-1.
Jimmy Spencer pulled a consolation goal back 12 minutes from time when he scored from close range but Justin Richards made it 7-2 in injury time.
Boss Sammy McIlroy made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Hereford on Monday.
