MORECAMBE ended the season with a 2-1 defeat at home ot Northampton.
The Shrimps trailed 1-0 at the break after going behind on 24 minutes through Kevin Thornton. Shrimps' keeper Barry Roche made an excellent save to deny John Johnson's close range effort but he could do little as Michael Jacobs played the ball back into the area with Thornton scoring from close range.
Guillam Bauza then had a golden chance to make it 2-0 three minutes later when he received the ball 25 yards out with Barry Roche stranded but thankfully shot well wide.
The Shrimps hit back with Scott Brown firing wide and Phil Jevons crossing just too high for Danny Carlton.
The second half started with Northampton missing another golden chance when Bauza was guilty of missing an open goal for the second time in the game, this time from close range as he failed to convert Liam Davis's left wing cross.
Sean Harrad wasted two chances before Northampton doubled their lead on 84 minutes when Ben Tozer volleyed past Roche from 20 yards.
Morecambe staged a late rally and Niall Cowperthwaite headed home his debut goal for the club in injury time to reduce the arrears. Kevan Hurst then went close to equalising in the 93rd minute but it was too little too late.
