Jim Bentley's reign as Morecambe manager began with a narrow defeat against Barnet.
The Bees' Mark Byrne spoiled the afternoon with a stunning 35 yard goal on 76 minutes that flew past Barry Roche's left hand.
Morecambe thought they had a way back into the game moments later when they were denied a penalty after a handball from Anwar Uddin went unpunished and Danny Carlton also fizzed a shot just over the bar as the Shrimps battled to get back into the game.
The game started at a frenetic pace with Barnet creating early chances with Barry Roche having to save well on two occasions from Mark Marshall and Mark Hughes curling a right footer inches wide of the left hand post.
Morecambe looked threatening as well going forward with Phil Jevons firing wide from an acute angle after a neat Lewis Alessandra lay off and Izak Reid denied by a superb covering tackle by Anwar Uddin.
The Shrimps started the second half brightly with Reid again denied by a last gasp Barnet tackle as Clovis Kamdho blocked his close range effort. Jevons saw a shot on the turn well held by Dean Brill and Reid also saw a long range effort deflected for a corner.
Barnet hit back with Izale McLeod hitting the top of the crossbar from close range when he should have opened the scoring.
Morecambe boss Jim Bentley hands three players debuts as the Shrimps kick off the season against Barnet at the Globe.
