THE Shrimps produced an excellent performance to hold the league leaders to a draw at Roots Hall.
The game came to life in the second period as Phil Jevons opened the scoring for the Shrimps on 52 minutes before being sent off 16 minutes from time for a push on Anthony Grant.
Down to 10 men the Shrimps were put under the cosh but defended superbly until Stewart Drummond unfortunaltely deflected Sean Clohessy's right wing cross past Roche and into his own goal seven minutes from time.
In a game of few chances so far Morecambe have shared the possession and had a`share of the chances that`were produced. Garry Hunter had an effort saved by Glenn Morris in the fourth minute and Andy Parrish volleyed well over at the far post after a superb Laurence Wilson cross.
Southend struggled to get into the game until midway through the half when they forced a string of corners with defender Peter Gilbert failing to het on to the end of a bobbling ball in the box. Ryan Hall and Ryan Leonard both drove shots wide. But the home side failed to trouble Barry Roche until the final minute when Hall cut inside and drilled a low shot which the keeper did well to hold.
Boss Jim Bentley made two changes to the side that lost 2-1 against Wimbledon last week.
Kevin Ellison was ruled out with a knee injury and Izak Red dropped to the bench. Lewis Alessandra partnered Phil Jevons up front with skipper Will Haining also returning.
