TEENAGE striker Jordan Burrow earned Morecambe a second successive home win with his first Football League goal.
The 19-year-old, recently signed from Chesterfield, bundled home Lewis Alessandra's left wing free kick from close range in the 75th minutes to give title chasing Southend a second defeat in the week.
It proved to be the decisive moment of a tight game which produced few chances.
Bilel Mohsni went close for Southend on 56 minutes with a looping header that hit the top of the Morecambe crossbar before Burrow struck.
The Shrimps went close to a second when Kevin Ellison saw a shot deflected inches wide in the 90th minute before the visitors had a golden chance to level three minutes into injury tine but Anthony Grant dragged a shot from the edge of the area wide.
Morecambe started brightly with Gary McDonald seeing a second minute shot well blocked by Mohsni and the same Southend player reacting sharply to defend well again and intervene as Ellison was teeing up a volley from the left hand side of the box.
Southend replied with Ryan Hall seeing a long range shot blocked by Chris McCready and Liam Dickinson curling an effort over the bar from the edge of the box.
Ellison again went close for the Shrimps with a shot that was deflected into the side netting by Chris Barker before the game became something of a midfield battle before Laurence Wilson drilled a shot into the side netting on 42 minutes.
Boss Jim Bentley made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 at Crawley in midweek.
