Morecambe 0-1 Wycombe

18 August 2015

THE Shrimps suffered a second league reverse of the season with a narrow defeat against Wycombe at the Globe Arena tonight.

The Shrimps dominated the game for long periods but were undone by a late Aaron Pierre header to give his side a third successive League 2 win and their best ever start to a Football League season.

The Shrimps made a good start to the game with Shaun Miller on his first start for the club particularly bright.

It was Andy Fleming who had the first two sights of goal though slicing a shot wide from 20 yards before being inches away from getting on the end of a Laurence Wilson cross on seven minutes.

Miller had a chance to open his account for The Shrimps shortly after the quarter hour but lacked the conviction to shoot when in space 18 yards out.

But after the promising opening the game became a scrappier affair with referee Mark Haywood’s whistle a regular feature of the action.

Andy Parrish had to be on hand to head clear from inside his six-yard area on 25 minutes after Barry Roche had got half a punch on Jacobson’s cross and Sam Wood had helped the ball back into the danger area.

At the other end Kevin Ellison saw a fine finish from 15 yards ruled out for a marginal offside.

Garry Thompson was the main outlet for Wycombe on his return to Morecambe, the Shrimps Wembley winner pulling the ball back for Stephen McGinn 10 minutes before the break but the midfielder could only pull a good chance wide from 15 yards.

It was the visitors who were first to go close after the break, Paul Hayes flicking up a well-worked free-kick for Jacobson to volley wide from distance.

Morecambe immediately retaliated with Lee Molyneux bringing a comfortable save from Matt Ingram with a free-kick from 30 yards.

It was still a game light on clear-cut chances though with referee Haywood continuing to infuriate both sides, Hayes’ well-struck volley being held by Roche.

Both sides continued to have half chances, Molyneux’s fine cross across the face of goal being hacked off his own goalline by Michael Harriman with Ellison lurking.

Substitute Tom Barkhuizen then entered for his first appearance of the season and immediately tested Ingram with a low effort cutting in from the left.

Ryan Edwards nearly broke the deadlock for the hosts 20 minutes from time, meeting Molyneux’s corner on the volley only to see it go narrowly wide.

But just as The Shrimps looked to be building pressure it was the visitors who went in front, Pierre beating The Shrimps defence to head home Jacobson’s long. looping free-kick on 74 minutes.

As Morecambe pressed for a late leveller they left gaps at the back, Hayes shooting narrowly over from 20 yards with five minutes to play.
