A LAST-GASP penalty from Paul Mullin gave Morecambe a third successive League 2 win.
The Shrimps' substitute kept his nerve to beat Joe Day from the spot after Kevin Ellison had been brought down by Newport defender Aaron Hayden to win the game.
After a shaky start Alan Goodall headed Morecambe into the lead with his third goal of the season on 34 minutes.
Jamie Devitt drilled in a right wing corner and Goodall nipped in front of his marker to head the ball into the bottom left hand corner of the Newport goal.
That was Morecambe's only real effort on goal in the first half as they were put under pressure from virtually the kick off by Terry Butcher's side who played some excellent stuff.
But Newport cane back with a superb leveller from Scott Barrow on 68 minutes. The left back took the ball 30 yards out and let fly with a superb strike to beat Barry Roche low to his left.
The home side had three golden chances in the first 10 minutes. Aaron Collins was put through on goal in the fourth minute but denied by Barry Roche and the Morecambe keeper was at his best again two minutes later to block an effort from Scott Boden who should have done better when he collected the ball unmarked six yards out.
Roche was kept busy with smart saves from Collins's shot from the edge of the area and a neat black after racing from his goal to save at the feet of Lenell John-Lewis who looked to run on goal.
The Shrimps made two half time substitutions with Jame Devitt and Shaun Miller being replaced by Alex Kenyon and Kevin Ellison and they looked far more solid.
They should have made it 2-0 on 65 minutes when Ellison was played in by Tom Barkhuizen but his effort was well saved by Day.
