Shrimps host Forest Green in final home outing

20 April 2024

Forest Green Rovers are our visitors on Saturday 20 April for our final home game of the season.

Morecambe will be hoping to end the season on a positive note when they face Forest Green Rovers, taking to the Mazuma Mobile turf for the final time this campaign.

In their last outing, the Shrimps made the trip to Edgeley Park to face a strong Stockport County side. First half goals from Isaac Olaofe and Fraser Horsfall secured a 2-0 victory for the hosts, and ultimately confirmed their promotion to Sky Bet League One.

In their weekend fixture, Forest Green headed to North Wales to face Wrexham AFC. A brace from ex-Shrimp Paul Mullin, along with four other goals from the Red Devils, meant Wrexham also secured automatic promotion to Sky Bet League One with a dominant 6-0 win.

Saturday’s two sides last faced each other at the end of September, when the Shrimps visited the New Lawn Stadium. On this afternoon, goals from Michael Mellon and Jordan Slew helped Morecambe on their way to a 2-1 victory, bringing all three points back north.

The Opposition

Forest Green Rovers have had a season to forget in League Two. Following Colchester United’s 2-0 win against Grimsby Town on Tuesday evening, the Rovers’ relegation to the National League was confirmed.

In their 44 games, the side have earned 36 points through nine wins and nine draws and Steve Cotterill’s side find themselves bottom of the league standings going into the final two fixtures.

Cotterill has been in charge at the New Lawn Stadium since January 2024, taking over after the departure of Troy Deeney. Before taking charge at Forest Green, the manager enjoyed spells at Shrewsbury Town, Birmingham City, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, and Portsmouth, amongst other clubs, and he has a wealth of managerial experience.

Key Players

Mathew Stevens leads the goalscoring charts for the Rovers, the centre-forward scoring 11 times in his 32 appearances so far this season. The 26-year-old made the move to the New Lawn Stadium in the summer of 2019, and has made over 130 appearances for the club.

Kyle McAllister has also played an important part in Forest Green’s campaign, the winger scoring five times and assisting a further six goals. The 25-year-old Scotsman joined the side in the summer of 2022, after making the move from St. Mirren.

Ged Brannan’s Pre-Match Thoughts

Morecambe manager Ged Brannan spoke on the need for his side to focus on their own game on Saturday afternoon. He said:

“We're going to go out and we're going to give the fans one final game at home, and take it from there.

“We'll play attacking football, pass the ball, and hopefully get lots of crosses and score goals!

“I'm not really bothered how they come to us, whether they come sulking because of relegation or not, but I don't think they will. They'll put up a hard game because they'll want to finish on a high as well.

"It's going to be a tough game for us, no matter what."

The Man in the Middle

Ross Joyce will take charge at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium on Saturday afternoon, the official refereeing his 35th fixture of the season. In his previous 34 games, Joyce has dished out 145 yellow cards and a further nine reds.

He most recently took charge of a game involving the Shrimps in November, when Newport County visited Morecambe Bay.

Joe Simpson and Daniel Woodward will run the line, with fourth official Thomas Parsons completing the team of officials.

Team News

Brandon Barker, Jake Taylor, and Max Melbourne remain sidelined through injury, while Shrimps’ fans will have been delighted to see Donald Love return from his long-term injury in the side’s fixture against Stockport County.
