Bury run out 3-1 winners in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy
On a disappointing night for the Shrimps, Bury ran out 3-1 winners in the second round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
The hosts took a deserved 2-0 lead into half time after a poor first half defensively from the visitors. But, the Shrimps battled back in the second half and gave themselves a chance after Shaun Beeley scored, but Ryan Lowe settled the game with a goal in stoppage time.
Bury started the game on top and were soon ahead, taking a 1-0 lead through Danny Nardiello who calmly slotted home a penalty after a Shaun Beeley hand ball.
The Shakers were looking threatening with almost every attack but Morecambe started to push men forward with chances falling to Padraig Amond and Andy Fleming soon after.
However Bury doubled their lead in the 39th minute and it was Nardiello who had his and Bury’s second of the night. The Morecambe defence was broken apart by some slick interplay by the hosts and the former Manchester United man was on hand to prod the ball home from inside the six yard box.
Morecambe had the better of the second period, constantly pressing Bury back into their own half and on 74 minutes Shaun Beeley finally produced a deserved goal for the Shrimps with a fine left-footed finish following some patient build-up play involving Tom McCready.
That goal set up a frantic final 15 minutes with Morecambe pushing forward at every opportunity. Despite their best efforts, which included a couple of threatening long-range free kicks from Ryan Williams, Bury sealed the game after Ryan Lowe capitalised on a
Barry Roche error in injury time.
