Eric Morecambe Trophy

Eric Morecambe Trophy delivered by the great man’s family ahead of this weekend’s BIG Match

Morecambe Football Club yesterday welcomed members of Eric Morecambe’s family to the Globe Arena. His Wife Joan was accompanied by Son’s Gary and Steve as well as Daughter Gail to deliver the ‘Eric Morecambe Trophy’ ahead of this weekend’s game v Luton Town.

It was the families first visit to the new home of the ‘Shrimps’ and their first opportunity to see the image of Eric Morecambe that commands one of the walls in the Globe Bar. They were all very keen to have their pictures taken alongside ‘Eric’ with a lively discussion starting around the year the picture might have been taken. Gary seemed to settle the debate with his Mum recognising the glasses his Dad was wearing from 1968/69. MFC Director Rod Taylor, retreating a safe distance so as not to be mistaken for Eric’s twin commented that the picture was taken during a visit to the Club to discuss him becoming Morecambe Football Club’s President.

Jim Bentley was on hand to give the family and Trophy sculptor Graham Ibbeson a quick tour of the ground, on his return he commented ‘what a great treat it was to hear some of the stories the family have about the great man. He certainly had a huge affinity with Morecambe as a town and his love of football drew him to our Club. It is fitting that his two Clubs are able to honour his memory by playing for the ‘Eric Morecambe Trophy’ on Saturday. It would be fantastic to keep it at the Globe at least until the return game in March.’

Ticket sales for the game tomorrow are going well with over 700 Luton fans expected to make the journey North from Bedfordshire. With this being the first home game for a month and the great win v Bury fresh in the mind the Club is hoping for a crowd in excess of 2500 for this match. Weather permitting there are a few things planned for half-time with some Cheer leaders from Lancaster University and a fancy dress penalty shoot-out on the pitch from 3.45pm.

Fans are asked to call 01524 411797 option 3 for all ticketing queries. The Club Shop is open from 9.30am on Saturday morning and don’t forget that ‘Kids go FREE @ MFC’
