Morecambe Ladies 1
Morecambe Ladies were crowned County Cup Champions on Friday evening after beating a strong Blackpool side 1-0 in a closely fought game.
Both teams started strongly but Morecambe were the first to settle, taking the initiative early on and winning more of the ball in midfield. As Morecambe's passing game began to flow, they started to link up well and work the ball through from the back.
Blackpool, who were previously unbeaten this season, were always a threat, particularly with their pace up front. Jade Hindle in the Morecambe goal was called into action when a through ball left her one on one with the Blackpool attacker only for Hindle to save well with her legs.
The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Doherty found herself with space just outside the box. Jenny Keane's run down the left had found Sophie Fish. She took the ball past one defender before laying off a neat pass to her strike partner, Megan Doherty, whose long-range effort left the keeper stranded.
Blackpool came out strongly in the second half but Morecambe held strong. The back line of Sarah Gardner, Jayne Roper and Georgia Phillipson were outstanding and frustrated Blackpool by their pace and strength, winning the ball and clearing their lines every time it was needed.
This was a great team performance from Morecambe Ladies, who now hope to push on in the league and add the league title to their silverware collection this season.
Morecambe Ladies would like to thank all their supporters who travelled to the game and Morecambe FC for all their support in preparation for the tie. In particular Rod Taylor who arranged kit and transport for the match and Dave Edge for his physio. Thanks also to Nick Barrett and Barry Whalley for all their hard work, dedication and commitment to the team.
Morecambe Ladies: Jade Hindle, Sarah Gardner, Jayne Roper, Georgia Phillipson, Jen McAlpine, Vicky Perry, Nicola Relph, Jenny Keane, Claire Howley, Sophie Fish, Megan Doherty, Danielle Veitch, Emma Gardner, Jodie Litherland.
Player of the Match: Georgia Phillipson
