Morecambe bowed out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy after a penalty shot out.
The Shrimps were just two minutes from winning the game in normal time when Graham Kavanagh broke their hearts with an 88th minute header from close range to take the game to spot kicks. The Cumbrians were the side who kept their cool scoring all four of their penalties while Morecambe scored their first two through Dave Artell and Henry McStay but then saw Mark Duffy and Wayne Curtis see efforts saved by Adam Collin,
The Shrimps had taken the lead on 56 minutes through Wayne Curtis with as delightful lob over Carlisle keeper Collin after he was caught off his line following hesitation in the Cumbrians' defence.
Morecambe then had a golden chance to win the game when Michael Twiss missed the target after another moment of indecision in the visitors' back four.
Garry Hunter marked his first start of the season by scoring the opening goal of the game after just three minutes.
Hunter raced through from midfield to slide home Michael Twiss's left wing cross from close range.
Carlisle then pressed for an equaliser with skipper Peter Murphy somehow missing an open goal on 13 minutes after Barry Roche could only parry Kevan Hurts's shot from the edge of the area.
Roche then saved well from Graham Kavanagh and Matt Robson before the Shrimps were almost handed a second when Carlisle defender Evan Horwood headed a Mark Duffy free kick inches over his own goal.
