McIlroy eyes Wainwright

Posted on: Wed 11 Jun 2008
MORECAMBE boss Sammy McIlroy says he is hopeful of signing former Darlington wide man Neil Wainwright.

Morecambe club officials were in Portugal at the Football League's annual meeting but were hoping to complete the deal with Wainwright on their return with McIlroy saying Wainwright will be a good addition to the Shrimps' squad.

McIlroy said: "I was very impressed with him in the semi-final of the League Two play-offs against Rochdale.

"Neil is a player who has a lot of experience at this level and I'm sure he will do us a good job."

Wainwright is 30 who has played more than 160 games for Darlington since signing for them in 2001.

Negotiations were said to be going well with another couple of players, while Morecambe have already missed out on one or two more.

Sammy said: "It's not an easy job but our board is working as hard as it can to bring in the players I want and I'm sure come the start of the new season we'll be ready for what will be a very difficult task.

"One or two of our players will come on a level as well now they've had a year's experience of League football.

"They know that it's important to cut out mistakes and they'll make sure we're better prepared for our second season in that respect."
