MORECAMBE boss Sammy McIlroy has tonight added two new players to his squad.
Winger Neil Wainwright joins from Darlington with goalkeeper Barry Roche completing his move from Chesterfield. Both have signed two-year deals which come into effect from July 1.
Wainwright joins from Darlington, where he made more than 160 Football League appearances for the Quakers after signing from Sunderland in the 200/2001 season. The 30-year-old began his career with Wrexham before a £100,000 move to Sunderland where he made three first team appearances in four years. He had loan spells at Darlington and Halifax before then Quakers boss David Hodgson signed him full time.
Talking about his move to Christie Park he said: "I had interest from a few clubs but Sammy McIlroy really sold the place to me. I was in and out of the Darlington side last year but I had seven great seasons there and a lot of good memories. But it was time for a new challenge and I am looking forward to getting started.''
Irish-stopper Roche, 26, has been an almost ever present for the Spireites for the past two seasons but was allowed to leave on a free. The 6ft 4ins keeper played more than 130 games for the Spireites in since joining from Nottingham Forest in July, 2005, but said he was "delighted'' to sign for the Shrimps.
He said: "I have a lot to thank Chesterfield for because they gave me a chance in the Football League. Their goalkeeping coach Steve Sutton was superb for me and I will always be grateful. We had a good season last year and really should have made the play-offs but it wasn't to be. He added: "Like Neil, Sammy McIlroy was a real draw for me. I have heard some good things about him and the club and I can see no reason why we can't improve on last year.''
Boss McIlroy said: "Both players have Football League experience which is what we have been looking for and I look forward to working with both players. I'm sure they will be excellent additions to our squad.''
