A good point on a terrible day

Posted on: Thu 09 Oct 2008

I THOUGHT we got an excellent point on Saturday in dreadful conditions with the wind and rain. It was one of those days that we see from time to time in Morecambe. When we arrived at the ground the weather was shocking and it always makes life difficult.

But I thought it was a really entertaining game both to watch and to play in, and I want to praise the ground staff because they had worked hard and the pitch was in great condition.

I thought we started well and it was a good goal from Stew Drummond and I think overall it was a decent display.

Jack Lester and Jamie Ward are probably the best strike-force in our division and we kept them out in the main. They are always going to get a chance but they didn't score in open play.

Okay, Ward got a penalty but we have had nine league games and only one striker has scored against us from open play and that is a good stat for any defender.

Going back to the penalty, I didn't think it should have been given at the time but I didn't make a fuss and argue about it because you never get anywhere with that.

It put us 2-1 down, so to battle back for a draw was excellent and I was pleased for young Aaron Taylor who came on for his debut.

The boy has got a natural talent and really has come on in the six months that he has been with the first team squad. And you could see that with the way he killed the ball before turning and shooting for the equaliser - he was unlucky the ball hit the post but Rene Howe was right on hand to put the rebound in.

It was good for Rene to score because it had been a few games and even though he bangs them in for fun in training, strikers want to be scoring. It is a confidence thing as much as anything.

Then I had a chance to win it at the end but couldn't quite get into the right position and it went just the wrong side of the post.

The gaffer said afterwards that when you are winning those break for you and I am determined to get on the score sheet soon.

But I am a defender first and foremost, although I will continue to get into the positions and bang a few in.

It's a first for me on Saturday when we go to Gillingham. I have never been there before and it is another one to tick off.

They were in the division above us last season and their manager Mark Stimson knows us well from the Conference days, so we know to expect a hard game.

But we are on a six-match unbeaten run and are confident. We just want to start turning some of these draws into wins.
