Drummond: "We are heading in the right direction''

Posted on: Tue 30 Dec 2008

Midfielder Stewart Drummond believes the two performances over Christmas show that the Shrimps are heading in the right direction.

Drummond, who scored his 49th goal for Morecambe in the 4-1 win over Macclesfield on Boxing Day, said that despite the defeat at Valley Parade on Sunday the Shrimps could take a lot of positives from their performances.

He said: "If all 11 players play well then we are more than a match for anyone in this league and that was definitely what happened against Macclesfield. It was probably the best team performance so far this season and we set ourselves standards that we need to reach week in week out to try and have a successful second half to the season.

"We then went into the Bradford game with confidence and started the game pretty well, playing some decent football. We ended up going in at half time a goal down and wondering how we weren't winning let alone level after they scored with more than a hint of handball.

"We thought we came out positive in the second half, playing well and putting them under pressure but the second goal killed the game off, with us somehow losing 4-0 in the end. It's not often you have 58% of the possession, have 10 shots and come away losing by that margin.

"Obviously the lads were disappointed by the result and no matter how much dressing up you do, we lost 4-0. But we know we aren't that far away from becoming a really good team, there are just a few things that need ironing out for us and we will still take confidence out of the performance.

"We didn't get carried away by the Macclesfield win and we won't get down hearted by this defeat. We know we are heading in the right direction and the good games are definitely out-numbering the bad ones.''

Drummond also praised the supporters who travelled to Bradford saying: "They were great and played their part against 12000 or so Bradford fans.''
