Lads stepped up to the plate

Posted on: Wed 12 Nov 2008

IT was an excellent win for us in the FA Cup on Saturday against a tough Grimsby side - and it made it even better because of our injury situation.

It says something when the manager, who has been in the game for so long, says this is the worst injury crisis he has ever come across.

When you have such an injury list - six strikers at the club and four of them hurt - the last thing you need is Andy Parrish and Ryan McGivern going down with a virus and then Adam Yates going off injured after 20 minutes.

But you have to get on with it and the lads who come in have to step up to the plate and take their chance.

I am glad to say they have done just that, especially young Aaron Taylor. He never expected to be playing so much football and we are not going to start talking him up and putting extra pressure on him.

But he is a natural scorer and that showed on Saturday.

I thought Saturday was a bit of a lively match with a few elbows flying and one of the lads got one in the cheekbone, Stanners got one in the nose and Adam Proudlock caught me in the nose with his elbow as well so I had to have a bit of a chat with him.

But football is a man's game - and if the referee doesn't protect you, you need to look after yourself.

That said, young Aaron caught me in the nose with an accidental elbow in training on Monday...so it's a bit sore at the minute.

But we are in the next round of the FA Cup and we have another home draw. It doesn't matter whether Cheltenham or Oldham make it through, it will be a tough game against a side from a division above.

Anything can happen in the Cup and we are that one step closer to the third round where you can get any one of the big clubs.

But we can't afford to think about the Cup. We have an important League 2 match at Chester on Saturday and we know what to expect there.

We are well used to playing each other but it might be a bit strange with them sacking their manager Simon Davies this week.

That can bring the best or the worst out of a team - but that is not our concern.

We are on a little run at the minute and we want to keep that going to motor up the table.
