Ron Mitchell

Posted on: Wed 02 Jul 2008

1954-59 and 1960-67. Full-Back 216 (62 cup) apps; 4 (1 cup) goals.

A local sporting legend, Ron first joined Morecambe in October 1954 after playing for junior sides such as Red Rose Boys' Club, PNE Juniors and Bolton-le-Sands.

His debut came in a Reserve team match at Vickers Sports Club which was abandoned. It didn't take long for him to break into the first team however, as his debut came on December 4, 1954 in a 3-1 win at home to Ashton United.

He soon became a first team regular but National Service intervened and he only made 2 Reserve team apps in 1956-57. He came back stronger than ever and soon became an integral part of the team, starring in the FA Cup run on 1958-59 and making such a good impression that Leeds United paid £1,000 for his services in November 1958.

Unfortunately Ron made just 4 first team appearances for Leeds in Division 1 and he returned to Christie Park in 1960, playing his first game back in a 4-2 defeat against Nelson.

Amazingly loss of form saw Mitchell spend the majority of the 1960-61 and 1961-62 seasons in the Reserves. His only first team game in 1961/62 came, strangely enough, in the FA Cup 3rd Rd tie against Weymouth when he was a late replacement for the injured Don Cubbage.

Ron's next game did not come until November 10, 1962 when again he stood in for Cubbage against Lytham and he finished the match as goalkeeper after an injury to Ken Udall.

A loyal clubman Ron began to become a regular again in the 1962-63 season, largely as a Left-Back and played up until he retired 1967 - his last game being a 2-1 defeat against Guinness Export.

Even then Ron stayed loyal to the club serving as reserve team trainer and even caretaker manager along with Gerry Irving in the 1970/71 season.

Combination League winner in 1962-63 and 1966-67. Lancashire Cup winner 1962-63. Combination Cup winner in 1964-65.
