MANAGERLESS Port Vale are close to signing former Morecambe defender Adam Yates, chairman Bill Bratt has revealed in the Stoke Sentinel newspaper.

Bratt has held talks with the 25-year-old right-back, and discussed him with the candidates bidding to become the club's new manager.

Micky Adams and John Ward have emerged as favourites after the Valiants completed their interviews.

An appointment is likely on Thursday, and Yates, who is from Milton, could be unveiled as the club's first summer signing.

"We are interested in Adam and have held talks with him," said Bratt.

"We will listen to what the new manager has to say about him and they are aware of the player."

Yates came through the youth system at Crewe, but was released and joined Leek Town.

He signed for Morecambe in 2006 and helped them win promotion from the Blue Square Premier when he also won selection for the England non-league team.

He has helped the Shrimps establish themselves in League Two during the last two seasons, but has been released after 91 appearances for the club.

Bratt refused to be drawn on the candidates to be manager, but confirmed the Valiants were close to an appointment.

The decision is due to be taken at a board meeting early next week. Personal terms will also have to be agreed with the favoured candidate.
