Chetlenham boss looks to add to squad

Posted on: Wed 17 Feb 2010

WEBSITE thisisgloucester.co.uk reports that Cheltenham manager  Mark Yates has been making enquiries about strengthening his Cheltenham Town squad ahead of Saturday's visit of Morecambe.

With midfielder Joss Labadie returning to parent club West Bromwich Albion last week after a two-month loan deal with the Robins, Yates has a small amount of money to play with.

He has put the feelers out for a number of players, with forwards thought to be his most likely targets, and is waiting to hear back from a number of clubs.

Yates said: "We are trying to bring in players that will improve the squad.

"We have made enquiries about a number of players and are just waiting to hear back from them.

"However, it's important that we don't waste what little money we have and it will be important to wait on the right player - one that can improve on what we have."

Yates has been casting an eye over three trialists in training and had hoped to see the trio play in a reserve game against Kidderminster Harriers yesterday, but it was called off.

West Ham United's Tony Brookes and Everton's Moses Barnett - both defenders - and pacey Southampton forward Kayne McLaggon are all hoping to impress the Cheltenham boss.

Brookes has an impressive pedigree having come through the renowned West Ham United academy.

The 19-year-old central defender is a regular member of the Hammers' reserve squad that contains former Robins loanees Josh Payne and Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson.

Fellow 19-year-old Barnett, who can operate at left-back as well as in the centre of defence, came through the youth ranks at Arsenal before joining Everton in 2007.

Although born in Sierra Leone he has been capped by England at Under-16, 17 and 18 level.

He has experience of playing in League Two after a brief four-game spell with Darlington in September 2009.

Welsh Under-19 international winger McLaggon has first team experience with Southampton, having made seven first-team appearances, scoring one goal, before having his career halted by a ruptured Achilles tendon a year ago.

The trio are the first of a number of players that Yates intends to cast his eye over between now and the end of the season with the future make up of his squad in mind.

"We are having a look at a couple of players that have been recommended to us," said Yates. "We want to be look at as many as we can between now and the end of the season, but we wont be doing anything immediately in terms of signing any of them."
