Gaffer seeks revenge

Posted on: Fri 19 Sep 2008
Morecambe boss Sammy McIlroy is keen to see his players get one over tomorrow's opponents Grimsby.

The Mariners, who come to Christie Park without a manager after Alan Buckley was relieved of his duties in midweek, beat the Shrimps 4-0 at Christie Park in the league last season. They also denied the Shrimps a chance of a return to Wembley with their 1-0 win in the semi-final of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy iafter two tight encounters.

They are games that McIlroy has not forgotten. He said: "In football terms we do owe them one I think but more because I want us to get another three points at home and build on our current run of form. We have gone three games without defeat and put in some good displays and I want to see that run extended further tomorrow.''

Talking about Grimsby he said: "You never quite know what you will be up against when a team has just sacked their manager. They could come here with a new sense of freedom or they could be really down. But at the end of the day we can't worry about them too much. It is all about what we do on the day.''

He did however have sympathy for the sacked Buckley saying: "It is a shame for Alan - he is Grimsby through and through.

"It is a very difficult job at the best of times and even harder when you have little to spend.

"It seems to be the way now that chairmen sack a manager very quickly."

Grimsby have not won in the league since they beat Mansfield on March 22 - 13 matches ago. Assistant boss Stuart Watkiss will be caretaker boss for tomorrow's game, with job candidates expected in the stand running a rule over the side.

One player still definitely out is Danny Adams who is hoping to make a return for the Reserves next week.

The full game will be covered live on the website for World subscribers.
