Morecambe U/18 2, Tranmere Rovers U/18 1

Posted on: Sun 05 Apr 2009

Strong winds seem to be a good omen for the team as they again played some crisp passing football.

Tranmere could be forgiven for having one eye on their league cup final against Grimsby next week but this was not the case as both sides showed great tenacity and spirit in a hard fought game.

Morecambe were in front before many had realised the game had kicked off. Bell picked up the ball just inside the Tranmere half, ran unchallenged toward goal before sliding in Poole whose low drive flew superbly across the Keeper to the far left bottom corner.

The game was predominantly fought in midfield and with Barrowclough outstanding Morecambe held well. With the visitors looking decidedly void of ideas they were gifted a goal on 25 minutes. Dodwell's short back pass allowing the prolific McCauley through on goal and he slotted his 25th goal of the season.

Morecambe fought back well with Poole and Bell a constant threat with pace and guile a goal looked inevitable. It came with five minutes left in the half. A move which saw in excess of 15 passes between Richards, Clarke and Bell. Bell eventually set free down the right, his delivery met with a thumping header six yards out by Barnes 2-1.

The second half remained a midfield battle and neither keeper was really threatened - Bee's involvement limited to a number of claims on the edge of the box. Morecambe's best moments came when Barnes got on the ball, twice he broke free down the left only for his final delivery to be well defended. A goal line clearance denied Trippett a goal from a corner but in honesty chances were scarce.

So Morecambe's rich vein of form continues but with two games in the coming week coupled with reserve involvement it remains essential that the youngsters prepare well for the busy programme.
