Morecambe U/18 2, Walsall U/18 3.
After extending their unbeaten run to eight games with a 2-2 draw against Bury - Barnes and Bell the scorers, Morecambe's final game of the season brought them up against Walsall.
Morecambe were under strength with several regulars earning call ups to the reserves. Despite this the home side started well and with Ball looking lively in his first start in over a month.
After early exchanges in midfield Morecambe created the first chance. Yates finding Ball with great long pass and his delicate chip touched over by the visiting Keeper. But ball was not to be denied. Trippetts cross on 15 mins fell to ball 8 yards out and his deft footwork evaded two defenders before he calmly passed the ball home.
As the confidence flowed so did the chances, Dodwell and Ball denied by sharp saves but a second looked likely. And so it came. On 25 minutes Ball evaded the offside trap, his electric pace took him clear of the chasing pack of defenders and this time his chip was too good for the keeper and he made it 2-0. The youngsters were then guilty of poor concentration a seemingly harmless attack brought dividends for the visitors when Morecambe failed to clear the ball Bowerman pounced to score from 18 yards.
The disaster struck after an off the ball incident Baird was given his marching orders and with it gave his team mates a massive task to see the game out, however after swift re-organisation, that they did until half time.
So the second half turned into a stubborn rearguard action, Yates and Jackson looking inspired and Ball still looking dangerous. Just as Morecambe looked to have survived the early onslaught through Scott's excellent saves Walsall drew level. A fortunate break in the box gave Grigg a tap in.
Scott looking assured made great blocks from the Walsall strikers and sub Crossley put in two incredible tackles when a goal looked certain. With everyone looking at their watches and 95 minutes played Walsall got a winner that they certainly didn't deserve. Wood's careering run saw him feed the ball to Grigg and he passed in his second from a tight angle.
Afterwards Walsall coach was extremely complimentary 'you were much better than us in the first half and it's pity about the sending off'
So a successful season draws to a close - more points, more wins and less defeats than this stage last season.
