Wigan Athletic U/18 2, Morecambe U/18 0

Premiership opposition two weeks running proved too much for Morecambe's youngsters. However Everton and England Legend Dave Watson paid Morecambe a huge compliment by picking his strongest side, following the reputation Morecambe have gained already as Morecambe's youngster were warned against complacency by the coaching staff.

It was honours even at the start with both sides pressuring the ball well and both sides struggling for a foothold in the game and midfield players and defenders wee on top. The breakthrough came on 25 minutes. Yates and Tabernham failed to deal with a cross from the left and it was the Wigan striker Holt who reacted quickest. He took the ball between the pair and was then harshly adjudged to have been brought down by keeper Bee and Holt himself converted from the penalty spot.

Morecambe fought back well and chances fell to Crossley and Yates from set pieces however the ineffectiveness of Morecambe's strikers was plain to see.

With the score only 1-0 at half time a second half barrage from the visitors was expected but it never happened and they were the authors of their own downfall when 10 mins into the half Yates was caught in possession and the Wigan sub Serrano ran through to slide the ball under Bee.

Wigan could have extended their lead shortly after but the visitors were saved twice by the crossbar. Ball briefly flickered into life on 70mins when he had a right footed snap shot saved. Silver also forced a save from the home keeper on 75 minutes when he had a shot saved at the near post.

The rest of the game saw both sides struggling keep the ball as many forced and unforced errors littered the game. In truth it was the home side who deserved the points but Morecambe must be congratulated for their spirited and exemplary work rate.
