Morecambe U/18 1, Bury U/18 3
This is a game that Morecambe will look back on and think with the football we played and chances we created how did we lose? On the other hand they will look and think if we make such basic errors we don't deserve to win!
It was a nervous start from the Morecambe youngsters on a pitch fit for any first team to play on. They soon found their stride and Silver was unlucky when his fierce drive from the right hit keeper Branagan and flew over the bar, the Bury keeper left wondering where the ball went. Ball also went close following great work by Farley down the right but the visitors struck first on 15 mins. A long cross-field ball was misjudged by Yates and Crossley, the left winger took the ball in his stride and passed the ball to Hudson, unmarked on the six yard line 1-0.
This gave the visitor confidence and with Patel the most influential player on the pitch Hudson had further chances to extend the lead and but for three fine blocks by home Keeper Bee would have done.
The second half saw more press for the equaliser, Wraight provided a number of testing crosses and Ball looked like having one of those days until the hour mark when he swivelled on a Wraight cross 8 yards out and blasted home to level. Ball then went close as he rattled the inside of the post with a left foot drive that left the home defence as spectators.
Morecambe pressed for the winner and had a Yates header cleared off the line from a corner. With 5 minutes to go Morecambe ignored organisation and pressed for the winner, this was to cost them dear as Morecambe had a corner and were caught with a counter attack midfielder Crawshaw starting the move on the edge of his own box and arriving in the Morecambe box seconds later to tap home Hudson's cross 2-1.
Before Morecambe had no time to recover as Bury made it 3, again a break down the Morecambe right saw Hudson unmarked in the middle for his second.
Morecambe now need to recover from this setback quickly to get their season back on track and the old football motto of do the simple things well certainly applied in this game.
