Ged Brannan, who had been playing with Radcliffe Borough in the Unibond League, previously played in the Conference with local rivals Accrington Stanley, who he left at the end of September 2005.
Brannan first came to the attention of manager Jim Harvey when they were both teammates in the early 90's at Tranmere Rovers, and whilst Jim's playing career was neering its end, Brannan's was just at the outset. After 227 league appearances for the Wirral club, big money moves followed, £750,000 Manchester City, £378,000 to Motherwell, and £175,000 to Wigan Athletic, with 3 loan spells thrown in at Norwich, Dunfermline and Rochdale.
He joined Morecambe, more or less exactly 2 years since the Shrimps first attempted to sign the player when he was at Wigan,(prior to joining Accrington Stanley).
After joining the club as a midfielder he ended the season in good form playing at right back and his performances in this position saw him sign a one year contract in the Summer of 2006.
Brannan played an important role for Morecambe in the 2006/2007 season, filling in at right back, centre back and in midfield when needed. He appeared as a substitute in the playoff final, becoming the first player to have won promotion at the old and new Wembley.
This turned out to be his last appearance as a professional footballer with Ged hanging up his boots in the Summer of 2007.
