vs Dover (25/04/98) in a 3-2 victory for Morecambe at The Crabble.
Holker Old Boys (1998)
Profile
Wayne Curtis was plucked from Barrow based Holker Old Boys towards the end of the 1997/1998 season and scored on his debut away at Dover in that season.
Unfortunately for Curtis he suffered a broken leg on two seperate occasions that kept him out of the first team scene for some time.
The 2001/2002 season began with Curtis playing in the reserves where he had a phenominal goal scoring record and looked like he was finally putting his injury problems behind him. Ironically his first team chance came through the long term injury of first choice striker Robbie Talbot and Curtis had a huge task to replace Talbot who had scored 15 goals that season.
Curtis didn't disappoint and became a regular scorer for the first team that saw him end the season with 11 goals to his name including an injury time winner against Harrogate Railway Athletic in the FA Cup fourth qualifying round that set up a tie against Brentford.
He started the 2002/2003 season as the first choice striker and he managed to keep his place in the team throughout the season despite the return to fitness of Robbie Talbot. Once again he scored a number of important goals with the pick of the bunch being the winner against Dagenham & Redbridge in a game that was the springboard for Morecambe's impressive end to the season.
Curtis found himself out of favour at the start of the 2003/2004 season despite the departure of Robbie Talbot to Burton Albion during the Summer. After starting the opening two games of the season Curtis was relegated to the bench in favour of young striker Danny Carlton and his first team chances were limited even further upon the signing of Ryan Sugden from Burton Albion at the end of August.
He was eventually loaned out to Barrow and returned the player that finished top scorer in the previous season. Despite being played out of position on the left side of midfield he had a fantastic end to the season and finish up as the clubs second highest scorer behind Danny Carlton.
Curtis' good form continued into the following season and he switched between playing left midfield and as a striker but his performances didn't suffer and he managed to get 10 goals before the turn of the year.
His impressive form saw him attract the attention of League Two side Rochdale who made two bids for Curtis but both were turned down by Morecambe and he remained at Christie Park. His performances for the Shrimps that season saw him win the Morecambe Visitor's player of the year award.
The 2004/2005 season saw Curtis continue as Morecambe's first choice left sided midfielder and his ability to score goals from this position continued also, scoring 13 times in all competitions.
Curtis kept his place on the left side of midfield for the 2005/2006 season as Morecambe reached the playoffs. Curtis scored a penalty in the second leg at Edgar Street in a game that eventually saw Morecambe lose in extra time.
He had an eventful time in the playoffs a year later, scoring twice in the second leg against York City to book Morecambe's place in the playoff final at Wembley.
Wayne became the first player to miss a penalty at the new Wembley but also became the first Morecambe player to sign a Football League contract upon promotion.
