Murphy began his football career with Accrington Stanley as a 16-year-old.
Towards the end of the 2007–08 season, he spent a few weeks on loan at Northern Premier League club Prescot Cables and signed his first professional contract with Stanley on his return from loan, in April 2008.
After six full seasons and 134 appearances with Stanley, Murphy signed for Wycombe Wanderers at the start of the 2014-15 season, scoring 7 goals in 32 appearances for the Chairboys.
In May 2015 Murphy became Jim Bentley's third summer signing after being allowed to leave Wycombe Wanderers.
It is a deal that excited boss Bentley who said: "We know all about Peter and what he is capable of.
"He is an experienced midfielder who plays with passion and aggression and is exactly the type of player we need.”
