MANSFIELD TOWN 2-2 MORECAMBE (5-6 PENS)

13 August 2019

THE Shrimps moved into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a thrilling penalty shoot out victory at Mansfield.

Two goals from Steven Old for the Shrimps, who played almost 70 minutes with 10 men, helped them secure a dogged 2-2 draw at full time before they won the penalty shoot out 6-5.

Shrimps’ boss Jim Bentley made seven changes to the side that drew at Mansfield at the weekend. George Tanner and Tom Brewitt made their debuts and there were recalls for Shaun Miller, Ritchie Sutton, Rhys Oates and Jordan Cranston.

Mansfield started brightly with Andy Cook going close with a header before the Shrimps threatened themselves when Alistair Smith’s clearance had to be pounced upon by Conrad Logan as it rebounded against his own man.

Cook threatened again when he went past Sam Lavelle but saw his shot well saved by Halstead.

After the early pressure, it was Morecambe who broke the deadlock in the 18th minute when a Lewis Alessandra corner found Old who nodded into the far corner.

The Shrimps’ joy was short lived however when Luke Conlan’s was sent off for a heavy challenge from behind on Kellan Gordon.

Mansfield almost capitalised immediately when two minutes later Cook rattled the crossbar from Mal Benning’s low delivery.

Soon after, Smith took aim from distance but his powerful effort whistled wide; meaning Old’s header was the difference at the break.

The Shrimps’ defences were finally breached on 56 minutes.

Khan’s corner kick was turned goalwards by Ryan Sweeney, and while there was an initial save from Halstead, the loose ball was knocked in by Pearce from close range.

The Shrimps then showed huge spirit to move into the lead for the second time minutes later when Old notched his second of the game with a looping header on the hour mark from Jordan Cranston's free kick.

Mansfield levelled for the second time on 69 minutes with a neat goal from Omari Sterling-James who turned sharply and fired a low shot past Halstead from the edge of the box.

The home side had their tails up following a second equaliser and the tables were almost completely turned when Sterling-James flicked a header marginally wide of the upright.

Halstead then made two fine saves from Hayden White and Benning before the home side went close to snatching the win in injury time when Smith flashed a shot inches wide from 25 yards.

It was Morecambe who kept their cool in the shoot out.

Shaun Miller missed the Shrimps’ first kick but Otis Khan then saw his effort saved by Halstead.

Sam Lavelle failed to find the target on the Shrimps’ fourth penalty but Cranston, John O’Sullivan, Adam Buxton, Alex Kenyon, Tom Brewitt and Old all scored theirs and as it went to sudden death Sweeney hit the crossbar on Mansfield’s eighth penalty and the Shrimps went through to an excellent win.
