Match Reports

SWINDON TOWN 3-1 MORECAMBE

31 August 2019

MORECAMBE suffered a second successive league defeat as they went down 3-1 to Swindon at the County Ground.

Three first half goals gave Richie Wellens’s side the victory against a Morecambe team who conceded three for the second league game running.

Shrimps’ boss Jim Bentley made four changes to the side that lost 3-2 against Exeter last Saturday with Lewis Alessandra being recalled as well as George Tanner, Luke Conlan and Aaron Wildig.

They started brightly but Swindon were in front after just five minutes when the home side made the most of a huge slick of luck. A Keshi Anderson shot was blocked but the ball rebounded perfectly for Eoin Doyle who took the most of his opportunity to prod home through the legs of goalkeeper Barry Roche.

Morecambe were soon back in the game however and levelled matters in the 13th minute when Lewis Alessandra rifled into the far corner. John O’Sullivan did well to rob Swindon of the ball and teed up Alessandra who made it three in two league games with a fine finish.

But Swindon regained the lead four minutes later as Jerry Yates slotted home following a neat Anderson through ball.

To make matters worse for the Shrimps Doyle got his second and Swindon's third in the 21st minute when he nodded home after a superb cross by Lloyd Isgrove.

From there Morecambe had chances to get back into the game and went close in the final minute of the first half.

On 44 minutes Shaun Miller saw a shot deflected wide after he turned well in the box and a minute later Ritchie Sutton headed a right wing corner over when he should have done better.

Morecambe continued to enjoy the greater share of the possession in the second half and should have got back into the contest in the 69th minute after Swindon goalkeeper Luke McCormick misjudged a cross, but Steven Old could only fire wide.

Isgrove shot wide late on as Swindon went looking for a fourth goal but the three points helped the Robins up to fifth in League Two while Morecambe remain on five points.
