MATCH PREVIEW | Morecambe v Mansfield Town

7 February 2020

The Shrimps host Mansfield Town at the Globe Arena on Saturday afternoon with Derek Adams looking to lift his side further from danger at the bottom of the table.

Graham Coughlan's side have won just two of their last 16 matches after throwing away a two-goal lead at home to Carlisle United last weekend, conceding a 94th minute Joshua Kayode equaliser.

Morecambe picked up eight points in January and have lost just one of their last eight games at the Globe Arena.

Five points separate the sides in the Sky Bet League Two table, with the Shrimps four points above bottom side, Stevenage.

Ahead of the fixture, boss, Derek Adams said: "Our home form has been very good, we're looking to take the game to Mansfield as we have done going away to Walsall and Cheltenham in our previous two games.

"We've played exceptionally well, we feel that we could have got more out of the game against Cheltenham and it was a terrific victory against Walsall.

"Mansfield are a team that are not too far ahead of us in the league table, we need to look to pick up a win at home, which will enable us to close the gap on them.

"You look at the league table and recently we've played a lot of teams in the top half and competed very well.

"It's important that now, we get points against the teams that are around and about us."

Match Reports

MORECAMBE 1-1 MANSFIELD TOWN

8 February 2020

A late goal from Alex Kenyon earned the Shrimps a battling point at the Globe Arena.

The popular midfielder turned home a Jordan Cranston corner five minutes from time to level after Joe Riley had given the visitors the lead on the hour.

Morecambe boss Derek Adams had made two changes to the side beaten at Cheltenham Town a week earlier with Ryan Cooney and John O’Sullivan back in the starting line up ahead of Christian Mbulu and Jordan Slew who were on the bench.

Morecambe started the better without creating too many clear chances.

Adam Phillips was the first to threaten midway through the half but after breaking into the box he was denied by a brave save from Bobby Olejnik.

Stockton had two shots blocked before Mansfield threatened in the final five minutes of the half when Kelland Watts’ header was blocked by Christoffer Mafoumbi and Sam Lavelle produced a fine block from Harry Charsley’s injury-time shot.

The second half began well for Morecambe with O’Sullivan, Stockton and Wildig all trying their luck from distance before Mansfield had their best spell of the game with Malvind Benning forcing a good save from Mafoumbi with a shot from 30 yards.

Charsley clipped an effort wide and Ryan Sweeney saw a curler cleared off the line by Cooney before the Stags opened the scoring. Benning swung over a deep free-kick which was met by Kristin Pearce and although his header was saved by Mafoumbi he could only push the ball into the path of Riley who scored from close range.

Adams made three changes with Kenyon, Slew and Christian Mbulu coming off the bench and the Shrimps began to fight their way back into the game.

Kenyon had a half-volley held, while Stockton fired over before the Shrimps finally got the goal they deserved when the former reacted sharply from a Cranston corner to score from close range.

The Shrimps then had a golden chance to win the gammon injury time when Jordan Slew was free in the box only to see his effort well saved by Olejnik.
