MORECAMBE 3-1 CARLISLE UNITED

12 November 2019

THREE second half goals gave Derek Adams a winning start as Morecambe boss.

The Shrimps trailed 1-0 at the break through goal from Jared Branthwaite but hit back in the second half with goals from Andrew Tutte, Aaron Wildig and a first Morecambe goal for Luke Conlan in injury time.

Carlisle took the lead in the 26th minute through highly rated 17-year-old central defender Branthwaite who took the ball in his own half and stormed through the Morecambe midfielder before producing a low shot that beat Mark Halstead low to his left hand side.

Prior to the goal the game had been pretty even. Halstead had saved sharply fro, Elia Sorensen after a swift Carlisle counter attack before Morecambe threatened themselves with Cole Stockton heading inches wide and Carlisle keeper Louis Gray saving Lewis Alessandra’s shot from the angle superbly.

The half ended with Carlisle on the front foot and Halstead forced into action again with a fine save low to his left to keep out a well strict low shot from Mohammed Sagaf that was heading for the bottom left hand corner.

The Shrimps forced their way back into the game on the hour mark with a penalty after Aaron Wildig was brought down by a combination of Christie Elliott and Nathaniel Knight-Percival and Tutte slammed home the spot kick.

The Shrimps added a second six minutes later when good work from substitute A-Jay Leitch-Smith and George Tanner ended with a low cross into the Carlisle box for Wildig to bundle the ball over the line from close range.

Carlisle looked to fight back with Olufela Olomola and Canice Carroll going close before the Shrimps sealed victory in the 91st minute when Conlan smashed a half volley past Gray from the left hand side of the area for his first Shrimps’ strike.
