MORECAMBE 3-1 CARLISLE UNITED

6 March 2021

The Shrimps collected their second 3-1 win of the week to move up to fourth in the League Two table.

Goals from Aaron Wildig, Toumani Diagouraga and Cole Stockton earned Morecambe another three points as they maintained their excellent home form with the only disappointment coming with a late Carlisle consolation goal 11 minutes from time.

Carlisle enjoyed a greater share of the early possession but saw their tempo hit by an injury to Josh Kayode who looked to be their main target man.

The Shrimps began to get on top and their first real chance came on the half hour when Carlos Mendes Gomes played in John O’Sullivan with one of his trademark reverse passes but the winger saw his final effort well saved by Carlisle keeper Paul Farman, who turned his shot onto the bar and behind.

The Shrimps were not to be denied for long however as they went ahead on 33 minutes when Wildig got the all important touch to slot home Liam Gibson’s excellent left wing cross.

Derek Adams' side added to their lead three minutes later from a set piece. O’Sulliven swung over a right wing corner, Harry Davis flicked on and the unmarked Diagouraga found the target with a diving header from six yards out to give the Shrimps a cushion.

Morecambe maintained their pressure at the start of the second half with Farman saving smartly from a Yann Songo’o’s header.

But Farman was beaten for a third time moments later after another neat Morecambe counter. Mendes Gomes played in Wildig down the left and he squared the ball perfectly for Stockton to tap home and make it 3-0.

Carlisle showed some fight at the death and enjoyed a period on top in the final stages and were rewarded with a goal on 79 minutes when Hayden headed the corner into the top corner despite the best efforts of O’Sullivan on the line.
