SCUNTHORPE UNITED 1-1 MORECAMBE

21 November 2020

AN INJURY-TIME goal from Aaron Wildig gave Morecambe a deserved point at Glanford Park.

Wildig scored two minutes into added time to earn a share of the spoils after Scunthorpe looked set for the points thanks to a goal from Emmanuel Onariase 10 minutes from time.

The first half saw few chances as both sides struggled to get into any sort of gear.

Scunthorpe had plenty of the ball but it was the Shrimps who looked the more threatening as they created two half chances.

The first came on 19 minutes when Stephen Hendirie’s left wing cross was met by Jordan Slew at the near post but his flick effort went wide of the right hand post.

The next effort of note came six minutes later when Yann Song’o tried his luck from 25 yards out that dipped just over the Scunthorpe bar.

Scunthorpe’s biggest threat came from centre forward Ryan Loft but he had just one half chance of his own when he got a header on target after the half hour that forced a good clearance from Songo’o.

The Shrimps started the second half brightly, and after dominating the opening 15 minutes of the second period without creating any clear-cut chances, the game burst into life in the final 30 minutes after a string of substitutions from both sides.

The Shrimps threatened first when Cole Stockton turned superbly on the edge of the area and shot into the side netting with Mark Howard beaten.

As the game wore on, Abo Eisa began to look lively down the left for the home side and it was his run into the box that ended with a corner from which the Iron took the lead.

The set piece into the box ended with Alfie Beestin’s effort superbly saved by Jake Turner but as the ball rebounded against a crowd of bodies Emmanuelle Onariase was in the perfect place to turn the ball home from close range.

The Shrimps showed spirit to raise the game and dominate the final moments, Adam Phillips saw a shot blocked by Devarn Green and forced a save from Howard’s leg before a deserved equaliser came in injury time.

Kelvin Mellor delivered a pinpoint cross into the area and although Wildig’s header was superbly saved by Howard he was able to slam home the rebound to seal another good point.
