Match preview: Morecambe v MK Dons

26 November 2021

The Shrimps return to Sky Bet League One action when they take on MK Dons at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday 27 November.

Morecambe come into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw against Charlton Athletic in midweek. Two early strikes from the visitors were cancelled out by a Cole Stockton penalty and a header from captain Anthony O'Connor.

The two sides have met four times in Sky Bet League Two. The Dons have had the better of Morecambe in their previous meetings with two wins compared to the Shrimps’ one. The other encounter ended in a 1-1 draw.

The Opposition

Form guide

MK Dons started off the season strongly and went eight games unbeaten before defeats to strugglers Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town. Liam Manning’s men sit 8th in the division, one point off the play-off places. Ahead of Saturday's clash, they’ve recorded three wins out of their last five league matches.

Manning began his coaching career as a youth coach at Ipswich Town where he was previously handed a professional contract as a player. He then joined West Ham United in 2015. The 36-year-old also spent time coaching at New York City in the MLS before he was appointed manager of Belgian First Division B side Lommel. In August this year, he was appointed MK Dons manager. After enjoying a successful September, Manning was named Manager of the Month.

Dons' key players

Top scorer Scott Twine has found the back of the net eight times this season and has contributed with four assists. The 22-year-old came through the academy at his hometown club Swindon Town and spent time out on loan at a number of clubs before joining MK Dons this Summer.

Club captain Dean Lewington was named last year’s player of the season. The defender has played over 700 games for MK Dons and came through the youth setup at Wimbledon where he turned professional back in 2003. The 37-year-old had a spell as interim manager after the departure of Russell Martin four days before the beginning of this season.

Striker Max Watters is on loan with the Dons from Cardiff City. He turned professional with Doncaster Rovers at the beginning of the 2016/17 season and was loaned out to Grantham Town, Gainsborough Trinity, Mickleover Sports and Maidstone United. Upon his release from the Bluebirds, he signed for Crawley Town where he scored twice on his league debut which was a 4-0 victory over the Shrimps in October 2020. The 22-year-old joined Cardiff in January this year for an undisclosed fee.

Shrimps’ pre-match thoughts

Morecambe boss Stephen Robinson said he’s confident his side can make it four games undefeated in all competitions.

“We know what we’re good at, we know what we can be better at,” he said.

“I think the importance of being undefeated, getting momentum. I’ve spoken about the word momentum which we haven’t been able to do from our team selection and we haven’t been able to do with our results- we’ve never got on a run.

“If you put the Newport game into it we’re three unbeaten and we have to try and make it four on Saturday and I’m confident we can.”

Meet the women and men in black

Tyne-and-Wear official Rebecca Welch will take charge of Saturday’s game with assistants Kevin Mulraine and David Avent running the line. Martin Coy will be Saturday’s fourth official.

Welch became the first female referee to be appointed to an EFL match in March this year. This season, she has officiated seven matches and has handed out 22 yellow cards.

Two goals either side of half-time saw the Shrimps defeated on home soil against MK Dons on a windy afternoon at the Mazuma Stadium. Mo Eisa opened the scoring in the 23rd minute before a Matt O’Riley double and Harry Darling header wrapped up the points for the visitors.

The Shrimps put the visitors under some early pressure and came close to finding a breakthrough in the opening minutes. First Wes McDonald stole the ball and saw his strike steered wide by ‘keeper Andy Fisher before Callum Jones won possession and played the ball to Courtney Duffus who fired wide.

In the 21st minute Liam Manning's side came close to taking the lead when skipper Dean Lewington played a long ball up to Scott Twine whose cross was met at the back post by Eisa. The Shrimps back-line managed to clear his strike in front of the goal-line to keep the score level.

Up the other end, Jonah Ayunga whipped a dangerous ball across the face of goal, however, nobody could get on the end of it to convert.

MK Dons took the lead a minute later when O’Riley threaded through to Eisa, who slotted past Andresson to put the Dons ahead.

The travelling side doubled their lead in the 40th minute when the Shrimps failed to clear their lines and the ball fell kindly to O’Riley who cut inside and struck home.

Two minutes later, Peter Kioso took aim from range however his effort was easily gathered by Andresson.

Twine twisted and turned his way into the box just before his break but the Shrimps’ stopper got his body infront of the ball to put it out for a corner and keep the deficit at two.

Half-time: Morecambe 0-2 MK Dons

In what was the first real chance of the second half the Shrimps came close to pulling one back. A long ball up the field found substitute Arthur Gnahoua whose strike forced Fisher to palm the ball out for a corner.

The resulting corner was cleared and fell to the feet of Alfie McCalmont who looked destined to find the top corner, until Fisher pulled off a magnificent save to punch the ball over.

Just after the hour mark, the Dons’ first chance of the second half resulted in their third goal of the game. Harry Darling headed powerfully into the net from Twine’s corner.

Gnahoua let fly for the Shrimps on the edge of the area however his shot sailed wide of goal.

In the 74th minute Jones tried his luck but his strike rolled wide of the far post.

Ten minutes from time Gnahoua’s cross from the left found Ayunga however his first-time strike was claimed comfortably by Fisher.

In the 82nd minute O’Riley added a fourth for the Dons after a quick free-kick. He fired into the far corner to add to round off the scoring in style.
