9 April 2023

The Shrimps wrap up the Easter weekend with a trip to Fratton Park on Monday 10 April to take on Portsmouth in Sky Bet League One.

Last time out, Morecambe were beaten 3-1 by Plymouth Argyle on Good Friday. Jensen Weir put Derek Adams’ side 1-0 up before the visitors fought back to claim the win.

Portsmouth were also in action on Good Friday - they were held to a 1-1 draw at MK Dons.

The Opposition

Pompey sit ninth in League One with 16 wins, 14 draws and ten defeats from 40 games.

Portsmouth are two-time First Division winners in 1949 and 1950 respectively. The Hampshire-based side has also been successful at League One level with three titles to their name. Pompey are also two-time FA Cup winners, most recently in 2008, and their most recent success was winning the Papa Johns Trophy in 2020.

JohnMousinho.jpg

John Mousinho is the Head Coach at Fratton Park. He played as a defender for the likes of Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage and Preston North End during his career. The 36-year-old is currently in his first senior coaching role after taking charge of Portsmouth in January.

Key Players

Striker Colby Bishop is Pompey’s top scorer with 23 goals as well as five assists so far this season. Bishop started his career in the Notts County academy and has spent most of his career in non-league. He then spent three years at Accrington Stanley, scoring 32 goals in 109 appearances, before signing for Portsmouth at the start of this season.

Joe Pigott is Bishop’s striker partner and has five goals and two assists to his name so far this campaign. Pigott is on loan in Hampshire from Ipswich Town. The 29-year-old earned himself a move to Ipswich after scoring 47 goals in 137 appearances for AFC Wimbledon between 2018-2021. So far, he’s made 22 appearances for The Tractor Boys before joining Pompey on loan at the start of the season.

ConnorOGilvie.jpg

Defender Connor Ogilvie also has five goals for Portsmouth to-date this season. The 27-year-old’s most recent goal came on Good Friday when he put Pompey 1-0 up at Stadium MK. Ogilvie began his career at Tottenham Hotspur and was loaned to Stevenage and Gillingham respectively during his time in north London. He spent two years permenantly with Gillingham before signing for Pompey in 2021.

John Mousinho's Thoughts

Pompey boss John Mousinho admits he's expecting a tough test against Derek Adams' men on Easter Monday.

Speaking to Portsmouth FC's YouTube channel, he said: "I think we'll have to watch Morecambe in their last couple of games.

"We had the fortune of watching them against Milton Keynes previously, so we've got a bit of insight into how they play.

"We know Morecambe are scrapping for their lives at the bottom of the league, they're going to be a tough opposition, as we see every week."

Team News

Derek Adams has a fully fit squad to select from aside from a few players who will miss out with minor injuries.

Meet The Officials

Ollie Yates will referee Monday’s fixture and will be assisted by Michael George, Daniel Bonneywell and fourth official Kevin Howick.

Yates has taken charge of 30 games this season, 12 in each of League One and League Two, and two in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Papa Johns Trophy respectively.

Yates was last in the middle for a Morecambe game in September - a 2-1 away win over Forest Green.

10 April 2023

The Shrimps settle for a point at Fratton Park in what was a closely contested Easter Monday fixture.

Despite a number of big chances for either side, the game ended goalless after neither team were able to break the deadlock.

Donald Love produced the first chance of the game for the Shrimps with a fierce, low strike, but the ball was deflected away following a block by a defender.

Moments later and it was Love again causing problems for the hosts, this time he dispossessed a Pompey man before crossing into the path of Cole Stockton, his shot was kept out by Matt Macey down to his left.

Pompey came close to opening the scoring on 14 minutes when a cross was sent to the back post, Colby Bishop was there to meet it, but failed to make any meaningful contact on the ball.

Both sides were creating chances just beyond the midway stage of the first half, with Stockton seeing a powerful effort deflected behind and, moments later, Dane Scarlett managed to break through on goal before rounding Connor Ripley, but his pass back into the mix could only find a red shirt.

Tom Lowery produced two similar chances in four minutes; he picked up the ball to the right of the Morecambe box before sending the shot narrowly wide of the far post.

In what was the final Shrimps' chance before the break, Liam Gibson looked to curl one from 20 yards, but the ball landed comfortably in the arms of Macey.

The Shrimps looked for a quick start to the second half with Dan Crowley laying the ball through to Stockton who looked to be in on goal, but Macey was off his line quickly to smother the danger.

Four minutes before the hour mark and the Shrimps produced another chance, this time Jensen Weir finding a way through on goal, but his effort was straight at the Pompey goalkeeper.

Substitute Reeco Hackett tested Connor Ripley on 63 minutes after controlling the ball and firing at goal, but the Shrimps’ shot stopper had it covered at his near post.

A huge chance for Pompey saw Dale meet Hackett’s cross, but Stockton was in the right place at the right time to clear the danger off the line.

Hackett again came close with a curling effort from 25 yards out, but the ball sailed over the bar.

Derek Adams' men came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock four minutes before the 90 after breaking down the right through Weir, his pull back to Jake Taylor saw the substitute send the ball well over the crossbar.

Goalkeeper Ripley was called into action in the final seconds of the game and managed to deny Hackett and point-blank range low down to his left, ensuring the Shrimps left Hampshire with a point in the process.
