Match Preview | Forest Green Rovers (H)

10 February 2023

Morecambe will be looking to make it five straight wins at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday 11 February when they take on Forest Green Rovers in Sky Bet League One.

Despite defeat last time out against Derby County, Derek Adams’ side have been in excellent form on home soil in recent times, most recently beating Bristol Rovers 5-1 at the Mazuma Stadium towards the end of January.

Forest Green were last in action on Saturday and were beaten 2-0 at home by Peterborough United.

The Opposition

Rovers currently sit 24th in League One with five wins, six draws and 19 defeats from 30 games so far this season.

FGR were promoted to the EFL in 2017 after beating Tranmere Rovers 3-1 in the National League play-off final at Wembley. After five seasons in League Two, Rovers were promoted to League One after a draw against Bristol Rovers in the closing stages of last season.

Forest Green are also the world’s first carbon-neutral football club and were described by FIFA as the ‘greenest team in the world'.

Rovers are managed by Duncan Ferguson who played as a striker for Rangers, Everton and Newcastle United during his playing career. As a manager, the Scotsman has had two interim spells at Everton and was announced as the new FGR boss at the end of January.

Key Players

Full-back Corey O’Keeffe has been a source of creativity for Forest Green this season. The 24-year-old tops the Rovers assists chart with seven so far and, before moving to the south west, O’Keeffe spent time with Birmingham, Mansfield and Rochdale. He has also represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level.

Attacking midfielder Myles Peart-Harris is learning his trade on loan at Forest Green from Brentford. The youngster has four goals and one assist for Rovers so far this season. His most recent goal contribution was a strike to put his side 1-0 up against MK Dons in late January, a game Rovers went on to lose by two goals to one.

Forward Kyle McAllister has also made a positive impact going forward for FGR this season having scored one goal and provided three assists so far. McAllister has spent most of his career in Scotland, playing for St Mirren and Partick Thistle respectively before moving to Gloucestershire in 2022.

Derek Adams’ Thoughts

Shrimps boss Derek Adams wants his side to continue their excellent run of home form on Saturday.

“We have to take our home form on board,” he said.

“We’ve gone eight games undefeated at home and we’ve been able to score a lot of goals.

"We’ve got players that are in form and we want to take that into this game and try and do the same on Saturday.”

Team News

The gaffer has been boosted by Jake Taylor and Max Melbourne’s return to training this week.

Caleb Watts is also back on the grass while Courtney Duffus remains out.

Meet The Officials

Matin Coy will referee Saturday’s fixture and will be assisted by Peter Gooch and Alan Clayton with Graeme Fyvie in between the dugouts as fourth official.

Coy has taken charge of 17 games this season, six in League One, five in League Two, four in the Papa Johns Trophy and two in the FA Cup.

The official was last in the middle of a Morecambe game earlier this season when the Shrimps were beaten 2-1 away from home by Lincoln City.

Report | Morecambe 1 Forest Green Rovers 1

11 February 2023

Morecambe made it nine games unbeaten at the Mazuma Stadium on Saturday afternoon, drawing 1-1 with Forest Green Rovers.

Stockton’s late equaliser cancelled out Jahmari Clarke's header earlier in the second half, meaning the points were shared between the two sides.

Ash Hunter produced the first chance of the game after taking a shot from within the box in the second minute.

A strong defensive effort in the first ten minutes kept the visitors at bay, Dynel Simeu cutting out a chance from a corner, clearing the ball well.

Rovers' first big chance came from a free kick; The ball was fired towards goal, but a magnificent diving save by Connor Ripley kept the score level.

The Shrimps looked to nick one before the break, Jensen Weir delivering the ball into the box, but Rovers 'keeper Ross Doohan claimed posession.

Half time: Morecambe 0 Forest Green Rovers 0

Weir carved out the first chance of the second half after closing down on goal from the right, but Doohan saved at the near post.

Moments later, the ball was played into the Morecambe box and Oliver Casey rose highest, But Ripley was ready and waiting to collect the header.

The Shrimps thought they opened the scoring on the hour mark; Liam Shaw's strike from distance proving too hot to handle and Stockton was on hand to prod home the rebound, however the goal was ruled out for offside.

With ten minutes to go, the visitors sent the ball into the box from a corner, Brandon Cooper eventually finding Clarke who headed the ball home from close range.

Morecambe continued to press forwards and were rewarded on 89 minutes, Stockton latching onto Ripley's long punt forward before putting together a nice one-two with Michael Mellon and striking fiercly into the back of the net.

It was nearly a late winner for the home side, Michael Mellon shot across Doohan's goal, only to see his effort sail narrowly wide.
