Match preview: Cheltenham Town v Morecambe

The Shrimps are back on the road on Tuesday 25 October as they travel down to The Completely-Suzuki Stadium to face Cheltenham Town.

Derek Adams’ side secured all three points against Barnsley on Saturday, with Kieran Phillips’ fourth goal of the season on 39 minutes proving to be the difference between the sides.

Cheltenham were defeated by a goal to nil away at Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon.

The opposition

The Robins are currently sat 20th in Sky Bet League One with four wins, two draws and eight defeats, accumulating 14 points from 14 games.

Cheltenham dropped out of the EFL in 2015 but returned a year later as National League Champions in 2016. The Robins spent six seasons in Sky Bet League Two and were crowned champions in 2021, the same season the Shrimps won the League Two Play-Off Final at Wembley.

Current Head Coach Wade Elliot spent 18 years playing before taking up management. He made over 200 appearances for Bournemouth and Burnley respectively before spending time at Birmingham City and Bristol City towards the end of his career.

The 43-year-old began his management career with Bristol City U21s before having a brief spell as caretaker manager of the first team. The Southampton-born manager spent time in charge of Stoke City U23s before joining Cheltenham in the summer, replacing previous manager Michael Duff.

Key players

Forward Dan N’Lundulu is the Robins' joint top scorer this season with three goals in 14 games. N’Lundulu last netted in Cheltenham’s two one win over Walsall in the Papa Johns Trophy at the end of September. The 23-year-old is on loan from Southampton, having spent last season with Lincoln City where he scored one goal in 14 appearances for the Imps.

Midfielder Ryan Broom is currently in his second spell with Town. Broom spent two years with the Robins between 2018 and 2020, scoring ten goals in 73 appearances, before he was sold to Peterborough. The Posh loaned out Broom to Burton and Plymouth before the 26-year-old resigned for Cheltenham permanently in the summer. So far this season, Broom has featured eight times and scored once for the Gloucestershire outfit.

Forward Charlie Brown is hoping to establish himself in the EFL at Cheltenham. Brown spent his youth career with Chelsea before joining MK Dons last season. He featured 26 times for MK, scoring three times. The 23-year-old joined the Robins in the summer and has one goal in five appearances this season. His first goal for Wade Elliot’s side came last Tuesday in a Papa Johns Trophy defeat to West Ham United U21s.

Wade Elliot’s thoughts

Cheltenham boss Wade Elliot told the Robins YouTube channel his side have done their homework on the Shrimps.

“Just because you won the last one against Morecambe doesn’t mean you win the next one,” he said.

“We’ve done our homework on them, they had a good result at the weekend, they got a point at Burton the week before that.

“We won’t be taking them lightly just because we beat them last season.”

Meet the officials

Scott Oldham will be the man in the middle on Tuesday night, and will be assisted by Christopher Husband and Justin Amey with Andy Bennett completing the line-up as fourth official.

Oldham has taken charge of 13 EFL games this season, three in the Papa Johns Trophy and League One, six in League Two and one in the Carabao Cup. The official has handed out 38 yellow cards and awarded two penalties this season.

Oldham last took charge of the Shrimps in April 2021, a 1-1 draw against Southend United at the Mazuma Stadium in League Two.

Report: Cheltenham Town 1 Morecambe 0

Morecambe suffered a narrow defeat on the road on Tuesday evening, in a 1-0 loss to Cheltenham Town.

Ben Williams' first-half strike was the difference, despite the Shrimps creating a number of opportunties on goal, but just not able to break the hosts down.

The first real opportunity of the game fell to Morecambe on just three minutes, as Liam Shaw did well to win possession high up the pitch. Some good build-up play between Shaw and Jensen Weir allowed the Celtic loanee the space to shoot at goal from just outside the area, but his effort went high over the Cheltenham goal.

Morecambe were looking the better of the two sides in the early parts of the game, with the majority of play being in the Cheltenham half. The hosts caught the Shrimps out though with a counter-attack on ten minutes in a two v one situation. Charlie Brown played in Dan Nlundulu, and with the goal gaping, the forward hit the side netting.

Despite their early threat, Morecambe continued to impress, with Liam Gibson trying his luck from distance with a curling effort, but it was well saved by Luke Southwood.

As such, the Shrimps could count themselves unfortunate to go a goal down ten minutes before half-time. Ryan Jackson, who was looking impressive with his pace on the right for Cheltenham, found the room to drive a cross into the back post and find the oncoming Ben Williams, who was able to sweep the ball home and give the hosts the lead.

With that goal, Cheltenham grew in confidence and were able to nullify the threats posed by Morecambe, with the first 45 minutes ending with the Shrimps a goal behind.

The Shrimps made two changes at half-time. Arthur Gnahoua and Dylan Connolly came on, with Derek Adams changing the system for the second half.

Cole Stockton had the ball in the back of the net on 49 minutes, with Liam Shaw playing a good pass to the forward to put him in on goal, but Stockton strayed just offside, with the linesman flagging for a free-kick.

As the half wore on, Morecambe were pushing hard for the all-important leveller. Caleb Watts was introduced to provide a spark in the attacking-third, but neither side were able to break each other down.

With five minutes added time given by the referee, Morecambe thought they'd gained a point when Caleb Watts thread through Kieran Phillips with a great pass. From a tight angle, Phillips decided to shoot only to agonizingly rattle the crossbar, with the fine margins just not with the Shrimps on the evening, as Cheltenham secured the three points.

Minibuses and coaches are able to drop off outside the Completely-Suzuki Stadium, and then park at local business ‘Mira’ on Cromwell Road, just around the corner from the stadium. They can then return 10 minutes before the final whistle for pick up.

There is no parking available on site on the day. There is some parking for away fans at Parklands Community Centre, just around the corner from the stadium. There is also, limited on street parking locally, particularly in the Pittville.
