Shrimps host Harrogate in New Year's Day contest

31 December 2023

We look to kick off the new year with a win as we face Harrogate Town at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium on 1 January 2024.

Morecambe will be looking to bounce back to winning ways on New Year’s Day when Harrogate Town make the trip over to Lancashire for the opening Sky Bet League Two fixture of the calendar year.

The Shrimps’ were on the receiving end of a 5-0 scoreline on Friday 29 December, when they travelled to Meadow Lane to face a strong Notts County side, and Ged Brannan’s men will no doubt be looking to bounce back from this result on Monday. A Macauley Langstaff hat-trick alongside goals from Dan Crowley and Jodi Jones were enough to see off the Shrimps on the night.

Harrogate Town hosted Tranmere Rovers on 29 December at Wetherby Road, and the visitors came out on top thanks to two second half goals from Charlie Jolley and Tom Davies. This defeat came after three successive league wins for the Town, and they will be no doubt looking to return to their previous form when they make the trip over to Morecambe.

The last four meetings of the two sides have resulted in two wins a piece, with Morecambe coming out on top in two of the last three league meetings. The most recent of such fixtures came in this season’s reverse fixture in August, where Harrogate Town finished 2-0 winners against a 10-men Morecambe side.

The Opposition

Harrogate have had a mixed start to the first half of their Sky Bet League Two campaign, 10 wins being balanced with 11 losses, with an extra three draws leaving Simon Weaver’s side on 33 points, one point ahead of Monday’s hosts.

Weaver is currently the longest serving manager in the EFL, having held the position at the North Yorkshire club since 21 May 2009, after being appointed as a player manager. His father Irving is the club’s chairman.

Key Players

Midfielder George Thomson leads the goalscoring charts for Harrogate. The 31-year-old has bagged nine goals so far this season in all competitions, the most recent being a 93rd minute winner against Accrington Stanley on Boxing Day.

Former Shrimp Anthony O’Connor has made 26 appearances for the side so far this season in the centre of defence and has three goals to his name. Shrimps’ fans can expect to see O’Connor return to the pitch at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium on Monday, alongside another familiar face in Liam Gibson.

The Man in the Middle

Referee Simon Mather will be the man in the middle for Morecambe’s New Year clash, taking charge of his 19th game of the season. 101 yellow cards have been brandished by the official so far this season, with an additional nine red cards coming out of his pocket at an average of 0.5/game.

Mather last made the trip to the Mazuma Mobile Stadium in October, where he officiated Morecambe’s fixture against Barrow in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.

He will be flanked by assistants Alex Gray and Karl Buckley, with fourth official Richard Aspinall completing the officiating team.

Ged Brannan’s Pre-Match Thoughts

Morecambe manager Ged Brannan spoke on the importance of bouncing back from Friday night's defeat.

"It's exactly what I've said to the lads," he said. "We learned from the Wrexham game, we will learn from tonight's game."

"We're going to get back to where we were first half against Bradford, back to where we were against Doncaster."

"We've got to go straight at [Harrogate Town], and play the way we want to play with the pace and quality on the ball."

Team News

Goalkeeper Stu Moore and defender Donald Love remain sidelined with their long-term injuries.

The Shrimps settle for a New Year’s Day point

1 January 2024

Jacob Bedeau’s late equaliser sees the Shrimps take a point from Harrogate Town on New Year’s Day.

Jack Muldoon opened the scoring late in the first half before Jordan Slew equalised on 57 minutes. George Thomson put the visitors in front with seven minutes of the 90 to play before Jacob Bedeau bundled home a late equaliser.

The first half chance of proceedings fell the way of the visitors after the ball rolled into the path of Muldoon who looked to shoot on the turn, but a vital Joel Senior block denied the Harrogate man an early attempt on target.

Senior then caused problems at the other end and, after turning two Town defenders inside out, he delivered a cross into the mix with Michael Mellon the target, though his first-time strike was wide.

Looking to catch the Sulphurites on the break with 18 minutes played, Jordan Slew rolled the ball into the path of JJ McKiernan. The angle was against the Northern Irish U21 international, but he still managed to drill a powerful effort at goal, which James Belshaw did well to hold.

A matter of seconds later, Town were awarded a free kick about 12 yards outside the Morecambe box. George Thomson stepped up and fizzed a shot just wide of Adam Smith’s right-hand post.

A blistering counterattack on 32 minutes nearly resulted in an opener for the Shrimps. Slew carried the ball out from the back and played the ball to Mayor, who passed to Eli King in the middle of the park, he released Mellon who made ground into the opposition box, but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

The visitors were ahead just before the interval. Thomson’s cross was initially blocked by a defender before the ball fell kindly to the onrushing Muldoon reacted quickest to prod the ball home from close range.

Half-time: Morecambe 0 Harrogate Town 1

Eight minutes into the second half and Thomson cut inside before firing a shot at goal, the ball took a deflection which took the sting out of the strike, allowing Smith to gather.

Similarly, at the other end, a neat ball from Charlie Brown released Slew down the left, he made his way inside and saw a strike deflected behind for a corner which the away side cleared.

Moments later, the Shrimps levelled the game. Some nice build up play saw Slew collect the ball with his back to goal, he turned and struck from distance, ultimately finding the back of the net to make it one-all.

Within a matter of seconds, a huge chance fell to the Shrimps as Taylor’s cross found Farrend Rawson in space inside the Town box, but his side-footed volley was straight at Belshaw.

Smith was called upon and made a cracking save on 63 minutes after meeting Thomson’s goal-bound toe poke with an outstretched leg, though the linesman’s flag arose, and play was pulled back for offside.

Thomson again popped up with an opportunity with just under 20 minutes of normal time to play. Dean Cornelius first saw his shot blocked by Rawson before Thomson took a couple of touches and blasted the rebound narrowly wide.

The visitors netted again on 83 minutes through Thomson. Abraham Odoh looked to strike but missed the ball, and there was Thomson to side-foot beyond Smith from just inside the Shrimps’ box.

Just before the 90-minute mark, Brown found himself in a shooting position and rocketed a fierce strike on target, but it lacked the direction to test Belshaw.

Our second equaliser of the afternoon came in the second minute of six added on. King’s corner was headed back across goal by Rawson and there was Bedeau to convert.

Thomson thought he scored a winner with one of the last kicks of the game, but his strike cannoned back off the crossbar and behind for a goal kick.
