Morecambe 2 York 2

21 August 2012

Late goal denies Shrimps three points

A LATE York goal denied Morecambe a second successive League 2 victory.
Ashley Chambers shocked the Shrimps four minutes from time with a close range finish as Jim Bentley's side had to settle for a point in a game they twice led.
The Shrimps took the lead on 53 minutes from the penalty spot after Richard Brodie opened his account for the club with a penalty after Gary McDonald had been brought down in the box.
The lead lasted just four minutes however, as York hit back from a set piece when Chris Smith headed past Barry Roche from close range after they failed to defend a set piece,
Morecambe regained the lead 17 minutes from time when Stewart Drummond volleyed home an Andy Fleming left wing corner but the home side’s hopes of a rare home win were ended by Chambers’ late strike when he volleyed past Roche from close range after the keeper had only parried the striker’s close range header.
The first half ended goalless with Kevin Ellison missing a glorious early chance when he failed to find the target from close range after Ingham had saved Brodie's low drive.
Ellison then volleyed wildly wide from a good opening before York went close with a Michael Coulson free kick from the edge of the area that was superbly saved by Roche.
