Shrimps end the season on a high

MORECAMBE ended the season on a high note with an excellent victory at Phil Brown’s Southend.

A goal from Andy Fleming on 33 minutes was enough to give the Shrimps a superb win and maintain their unbeaten record against the Shrimps.

Fleming took advantage of some hesitation by home defender Sean Clohessy down the right hand side to win the ball by the touchline and run on goal before squeezing a shot past home keeper Phil Smith.

The goal came after a period of pressure from the home side which saw them create several good chances.

Gavin Tomlin was denied an opening goal by an excellent Barry Roche save and Barry Corr wasted a good opening when he sidefooted well over from 12 yards when he should have done better.

The home side saw Southend maintain the pressure but struggle to get past a resolute Morecambe defence. Corr volleyed straight at Roche and Ryan Leonard turned an effort over from 10 yards after a good cross from former Morecambe winger Kevan Hurst.

Southend’s most threatening moment came late in the game from a poor backpass from Jack Redshaw but Roche read the situation well and managed to get in a vital clearance.

It was Morecambe who went closest to scoring a second when Lewis Alessandra curled an effort wide of the left hand post and Chris Holroyd forced Smith into a smart save low to his right with a well struck shot from the edge of the area.

Fleming went close to doubling his tally with a last minute shot that sailed inches over as Morecambe ended the game, and their season, on a high note.
