Rare recent defeat for Shrimps

MORECAMBE suffered a rare recent defeat as in form Burton Albion made it eight home wins in succession.
The Shrimps suffered an early blow when they were a goal down on 17 minutes. The home side found some space down the right and Robbie Weir forced a great save from Barry Roche but the Morecambe keeper could do nothing as Jacques Mahgoma slid in at the far post to convert the loose ball.
From there the home team took charge and were denied a second goal moments later by the excellent Roche who saved twice in quick succession.
Roche then had to tip over an Ian Sharps header that was heading for the top left hand corner before the Shrimps went close themselves to a leveller when Kevin Ellison’s shot beat Stuart Tomlinson but was cleared off the line by his own player Jordan Burrow.
The Shrimps’ revival came to an end on the stroke of half time when Burton added a second in injury time. Michael O’Connor this time saw a shot well stopped by Roche but Kee was on hand to head the loose ball into the empty net from six yards out.
The Brewers then added a third four minutes after the restart with Kee finding the target again. A cross from the right was headed back across goal by Michael Symes and the former Accrington striker lashed a superb volley past the helpless Roche.
The Shrimps then hit back and enjoyed the better of the possession with Ellison forcing Tomlinson into a fine save low to his left and Burrow testing the home keeper with a snapshot from 10 yards out.
The Shrimps’ persistence paid off when they pulled a goal back from a Jack Redshaw penalty after Chris Holroyd had been brought down by Damien McCrory.
The pressure continued with Nick Fenton heading a Ryan Willams free kick inches wide before Holroyd scored his first for the club on 90 minutes with a fierce right foot shot to beat Tomlinson.
Redhsaw went close to giving to the Shrimps a dramatic leveller in injury time but the home side held on to deny Jim Bentley’s side.
