Narrow defeat for Reserves

THE Reserves went down to a narrow defeat at the hands of Oldham Athletic at the Globe Arena on Wednesday evening.

Chris Holroyd fired the Shrimps into the lead on 23 minutes. Aaron McGowan swung in a cross from the right and Holroyd reacted sharply to fire the ball past Oldham keeper Liam Jacob.

Oldham equalised through a controversial penalty on the stroke of half time. Chrid Doyle was harshly adjudged to have handed a left wing cross and Dan Taylor beat Cookson from the spot.

Both sides came out fighting for the second half and went close to scoring a second.

Cristian Montano forced Cookson into a neat save low to his right hand side just moments after the restart but the Shrimps hit back with Doyle heading inches wide of the left hand post and Jordan Burrow drilling a shot just wide.

Andy Fleming dragged an effort wide on 62 minutes before Burrow put the Shrimps 2-1 up on 66 minutes with a header that looped over the Oldham keeper.

The Shrimps unfortunately then went behind as they conceded two quick fire goals.

Dan Taylor scored his second on 67 minutes with a far post header that sneaked in between the keeper and far post.

Eight minutes later Oldham took the lead for the first time in the game when Montano scored a superb goal with a half volley from 25 yards out that dipped over Cookson and into the top corner of the Morecambe goal.

Doyle went close to scoring a third for Morecambe on 80 minutes but he flashed a shot wide from close range

The opening stages went from end to end with Chris Holroyd bundling the ball inches wide on 19 minutes and Dan Parkinson drilling an effort wide of the right hand post five minutes later.

OIldham looked sharp themselves with young keeper Jack Cookson making a superb save from Dan Taylor as he did well to tip over a close range shot.
