Chesterfield comeback wins top award

THE Shrimps' stunning comeback against Chesterfield has earned them the League Managers Association Performance of the Week honour.

The five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement that this week, the LMA Performance of the Week Award should go to Morecambe following their excellent 4-3 home win against Chesterfield in Sky Bet League Two.

Morecambe manager Jim Bentley will receive a specially engraved crystal football in a presentation to commemorate the award.

Morecambe won the ninth LMA Performance of the Week Award of the season to secure victory over league leaders Chesterfield.

Padraig Amond scored a late winner as Morecambe completed a remarkable comeback from three goals down at the Globe Arena.

The visitors seemed to be in control after Eoin Doyle's brace and a Gary McSheffrey effort but goals from Kevin Ellison, Mark Hughes and Jack Sampson restored parity. Amond's late header then gave the hosts the points and extended Morecambe's unbeaten run to seven games.

After the match, Bentley was delighted with the result;

"I can't believe the spirit and determination that these lads have.

"At half-time we were three goals down to a side who I thought were outstanding.

"But we have come from behind a few times this year and I told them at half-time that if they got an early goal the game wasn't over.

"We did just that and it changed the game dramatically. We played some superb stuff after that and the crowd got right behind us and every time we went forward we looked dangerous.

"At the start of the season we were tipped to be one of those teams who were favourites for relegation, but I always said that this bunch of lads has a spirit that money can't buy and they have proved that again."
