Amond hopes to build on first goal

Striker glad to get off the mark

SUMMER signing Padraig Amond is hoping his first goal of the season last week will be the perfect platform for the coming weeks.

Amond chose a great time to open his account for the Shrimps with the winner against Plymouth last Saturday and hopes he can build on that over the coming weeks.

He said: “I was really, really happy, and I would never had said it to anyone but I was a little bit anxious but you try and keep a brave face on every game you go without a goal. I am still sure that I had a goal disallowed wrongly against Newcastle and their keeper made a couple of good saves as well that night and you do start to get a bit anxious.

“I haven’t really played much up front and hopefully I’ve given the gaffer a bit of a headache.

“Jack Sampson played really well against Exeter last week and Newcastle but I’ve thrown my hat into the ring and we’ll just see what happens this week.”

The 25-year-old said it was all the sweeter to score a winner on home turf.

He said: “It’s always nice to score any goal and it’s nice when it’s the winner but it’s even nicer when it’s the winner at home.

“More importantly it was a great win for the lads after a tough week.

“I suppose if you’d offered us this sequence of results in the last three games everyone would have taken it.

“Newcastle was a tough game which was always going to look after itself and it was always going to be hard to get ourselves going today.

“We had 6,000 here the other night which is easy to lift your game for.

“Today was probably the most important of the three games during the week, and it was great to get the win.”
