Fans have the chance to help raise £50,000 for a new Morecambe and Wise attraction this weekend
MORECAMBE and Luton fans have the chance to help raise £50,000 for a new Morecambe and Wise attraction this weekend.
Money from the sale of commemorative rosettes at this Saturday’s Morecambe v Luton match will go towards the ‘Morecambe Gets Wise’ campaign for a new bronze piece of wall art depicting the comedy duo.
There will be a party atmosphere at the match, as the Hatters and the Shrimps were Eric’s two favourite football teams. Sculptor Graham Ibbeson has created a special Eric Morecambe Trophy to be awarded to the winning team.
Fans are being encouraged to dress up as Eric Morecambe and there will be a fun penalty shoot-out between rival supporters who are wearing Eric and Ernie-themed clothes.
Mark Dixon, the Shrimps' general manager, said: “We’re delighted to have this opportunity to honour the great man.
There’s always been a friendly rivalry between Morecambe and Luton and we’re both absolutely respectful of what he means to a nation of comedy fans.
We want to do anything we can to help the fundraising and get the bronze tribute to Eric and Ernie into the town.”
